We as women are highly attuned creatures. We feel the swells of energy from the celestial movements in our bodies as sensations and messages. We can tap into these gifts and create our lives via our intuition and internal wisdom.
Whether you experience an internal monthly moon, or not, the practice of tracking the moon is a powerful way to reconnect with the rhythms of nature. The constitution of life is in growing and declining.
Origins of our Moon Phrases
When the visible sunlight reflected on the moon increases from night to night, we call this a waxing moon. Wax means “to grow” as in German wachsen. The kind of growing that non-plant entities do, as opposed to the “blooming” or “blossoming” of flowers.
Similarly, we demarcate the lessening of light toward the night of a dark moon, which is called waning. Etymologically, we trace the meaning of wane as “diminish” as in Old English wana or wanian, which is to shrink or lessen.
Our internal Moon Phases
Women are divine creatures of cyclical energy and wisdom, which can be appreciated at a macro level. From day-to-day, we may feel that our emotions, energy levels, and state of mind are wildly fluctuating. When we zoom out, however, we see a much more consistent and intelligent structure. Our bodies undergo cyclical rises and falls in different hormones to produce the functions of womanhood – monthly bleeds, fertility, libido – and along with these come an associated set of emotional experiences. You may crave adventure whilst ovulating, or be most inclined for a cuddly night in when you’re on the eve of your bleed.
Considering our cycles of expression when accepting and making plans is pertinent for a happy coexistence with our female bodies. The current societal climate of pre-planned schedules and events can be difficult for those of us who experience monthly bleeds and feel the need for rest and tenderness at these times. Many women feel burnout and fatigue when they consistently ignore their body’s messages and carry on with the to-do’s and appointments. By tracking our cycle and scheduling big social events around ovulation time, and giving space in the schedule for no workout classes and less work meetings during bleeds, we will engineer our lifestyle to work for us in harmony with our natural rhythms.
Just as the moon changes shape through the month, the modern woman must also be willing to adapt and honor her emotional state. During our shedding phase, we experience a shrinking amount of energy to expend on external projects and a decreased tolerance for ambiguity and events. At the same time our understanding of boundaries and receptivity to intuitive messages increases. Then as we form an egg within us to release during ovulation, our creativity and sexual energy grows and we feel lighter and more open to new adventures. We may also find it easier to find the words to share our views with others, so many meetings and events will likely flow in greater resonance with our intentions during this time.
The sensations and messages we receive every day help us to guide our choices and ultimately to craft the life we choose to live in. For that we are blessed! To have so many wonderful signals to let us know what is too much and what is too little. So hallelujah for being a woman! Viva la matriarchy! Who better to lead our families and communities than the beings who are so intimately tied to the cycles and seasons of nature.
